Replace Spa Pack or Just the Circuit Board?

If you’re here, you’ve likely discovered that your spa pack has gone bad, and you’re now faced with the question: should you replace just the circuit board or the entire spa pack? Let’s look into some key considerations.

Replacing the Circuit Board (PCB)

First, let’s talk about replacing just the circuit board (also called a PCB). Here are the main things to keep in mind:

1. Identifying the Circuit Board

You’ll need to identify the exact make and model of your circuit board to find a suitable replacement. You can check out a previous video of mine here.

If your spa pack is more than 10 years old, finding a replacement circuit board might not be possible. In that case, upgrading your entire spa pack might be your only option.

2. Check for Revisions

Manufacturers often release different revisions of circuit boards under the same name. These revisions can affect compatibility with auxiliary components like pumps and blowers. Make sure that the replacement board you’re buying will work with your existing equipment.

3. Cost Considerations

Older spa packs tend to have rarer parts, and the more difficult they are to find, the more expensive they become. You might end up spending more on a replacement circuit board than you would on a brand-new spa pack.

As a general rule: if the circuit board costs more than $500, it’s better to replace the entire spa pack.

4. Supplier Warranty and Return Policy

If you decide to replace the circuit board, check your supplier’s warranty and return policy. Buying the wrong part or one that turns out to be incompatible could result in wasted money. Make sure you’re covered in case something goes wrong.

5. Comfort Level with Electrical Work

Replacing a circuit board involves working with wiring and electricity. If you’re not comfortable with this kind of work, it’s best to consult a qualified electrician or professional.

Replacing the Entire Spa Pack

So, what about replacing the entire spa pack if your circuit board fails? Here are the factors to consider:

1. You Don’t Have to Replace Like-for-Like

You don’t necessarily need to replace your spa pack with the exact same model. If your hot tub and spa pack are older, availability can be an issue, and replacing with the same model could be more expensive. In many cases, getting a newer, more modern bundle that includes both the spa pack and auxiliary equipment (like the topside control) is more cost-effective.

2. Price Considerations

How do you know if you’re paying too much for a spa pack? If you’re spending around $600 or more, you’re likely paying on the high end. There are many newer, cheaper models available that could meet your needs at a better price.

3. My Recommended Spa Pack

One of my favorite options is the Balboa BP7. This spa pack is designed as a replacement for older Balboa models, as well as ACC and Gecko spa packs. It offers up to 32 program combinations, so it’s very likely to work for your setup.

Just be aware that you may need to change the connectors on your pump and blower, depending on your current spa pack. The BP7 comes with AMP connectors (the white ones), so if your existing system uses colored connectors, you’ll need to swap them out.
