This is typically achieved using a combination of a pump and a filter and calculating the flow needed to achieve this 6 hour turnover rate.

The water that spills over the edge must be captured and redirected back into the pool. This is typically achieved using a catch basin or trough that collects the water and sends it back to the pool. What is a balance tank for a DIY Infinity pool?

When water spills over the infinity edge of the pool, it needs to go somewhere and be circulated back into the pool to maintain a constant water level. This is where the balance tank comes in. The balance tank is connected to the main pool via a series of pipes and channels. Its primary purpose is to collect all the water that overflows from the edges. 

The balance tank is designed to be slightly larger than the volume of water that flows over the infinity edge. This ensures that the tank always has enough water to maintain the water level in the main pool. In case there are fluctuations in the flow rate or volume, there is enough space for the balance tank to accommodate the additional water. 

Once the water is collected in the balance tank, it is then pumped back into the main pool using a series of pumps and filters. This ensures that the water is properly circulated and filtered, keeping it clean and safe for swimming.

How big should the balance tank be?

As a general rule of thumb, the balance tank should be designed to hold at least twice the volume of water that spills over the infinity edge in a given period.

For example, if your pool has an infinity edge that spills over 500 gallons of water per minute, then you would need a balance tank with a minimum capacity of 1000 gallons. This ensures that the tank can hold enough water to maintain a constant water level in the pool, even if there are fluctuations in the flow rate or volume.

In addition to the flow rate and volume of water, it’s also important to consider the physical space available for the balance tank. The tank should be located in a convenient location that allows for easy access and maintenance, and it should be large enough to accommodate the necessary pumps and filters.

You also need to ensure that you take into account the number of people that will be entering your pool. As a rule of thumb, each person that enters the pool displaces roughly 70 litres of water. So, if you have a capacity for 10 people, that will displace around 700 litres at full capacity. 

It’s important to note that the design and installation of the balance tank are critical to the proper functioning of your DIY infinity pool.
