Swim Jet Considerations: Everything You Need to Know

Swim Jet

Swim jets can be an incredible addition to your hot tub or pool, transforming a limited space into a functional area for swimming and exercise. By generating a steady counter-current, swim jets allow you to swim continuously without needing a full-length lap pool.

However, before you dive into installing one, there are some important considerations to keep in mind to ensure that your swim jet integrates seamlessly and performs as expected.

This article will guide you through the key factors to consider when choosing and installing swim jets for your hot tub or pool.

Note: This article will focus specifically on systems installed during the initial construction rather than retrofitted options.

What is a Swim Jet?

A swim jet, also known as a counter-current system, is a device that creates a stream of water strong enough to allow you to swim in place. Think of it as a treadmill, but for swimming. With a swim jet, you can enjoy the benefits of a full swim workout in a compact space, which is particularly useful if you have a small pool or hot tub.

Swim jets come in various types, typically distinguished by the power source they use—hydraulic or electric pump jets. Hydraulic jets are high-powered and can create a stronger current, making them suitable for more experienced swimmers looking for an intense workout.

However, these are often way more expensive (3-4x) than pump jets, which are generally sufficient for recreational swimmers seeking moderate resistance for a casual swim.

You can find my range of swim jet options below.

Choosing the Right Swim Jet for Your Needs

  • For Professional Swimmers: If you’re a professional swimmer or training enthusiast, a high-powered hydraulic swim jet is likely the best choice. These systems provide a strong current that can closely mimic the feel of open-water swimming.
  • For Recreational Swimmers: For those who swim recreationally, a standard pump-powered swim jet should be enough. These systems are more affordable and provide enough resistance for a relaxing, low-impact workout.

Benefits of Swim Jets

Adding a swim jet to your pool or hot tub can provide several advantages, including:

  1. Exercise in Limited Space: Swim jets allow you to get a continuous swim workout without the need for a large lap pool.
  2. Increased Property Value: Many homeowners find that having a swim jet can add value to their home. While there is no concrete evidence, some realtors believe it enhances property appeal.(Don’t take my words on this, I’m a hot tub expert, not a realtor!)
  3. Improved Fitness: Swimming against a current offers an effective cardio workout that builds endurance, strength, and flexibility.

Pool and Tub Compatibility

Not all swim jets are compatible with every type of pool or hot tub. The material and construction of your pool play a significant role in determining which swim jets you can install. For example:

  • Concrete or Block Pools: Some swim jets are designed specifically for concrete or block pools and may not work with other materials.
  • Fiberglass and Plastic Pools: Make sure to verify whether the swim jet system is compatible with fibreglass or plastic pools, as not all models are suitable for these surfaces.

Size Considerations

One of the most critical factors to consider is the size of the pool or hot tub in which you’ll install the swim jet. Here are a few size guidelines to help you decide:

  • Pool Length: Swim jets generally require a minimum pool length of 4 meters (about 13 to 14 feet) to work effectively. In smaller pools, the water from the jet can bounce back off the rear wall, creating an opposing wave that disrupts your swim.
  • Depth: The depth of the pool also matters. Ensure that it’s deep enough to prevent your hands from hitting the floor while swimming against the current.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right swim jet involves understanding your swimming needs, pool type, and size limitations. Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or looking for a fun and effective way to exercise, the right swim jet can add significant value to your pool or hot tub experience.
