Tub & Pool Designer Pro: Free Hot Tub and Pool Design Software

Tub & Pool Designer Pro is my free online design software for hot tubs and plunge pools. You draw your build in 3D with real measurements, then, if you want, I turn the design into a plumbing diagram and architectural CAD drawings. This post explains how it works and where it fits into a DIY build.

Where this came from

It seems a long time ago that I wrote the first version of buildahottub.com, which was essentially a single web page. That page still exists and explains how I built my own hot tub, step by step, with all the photos I took. I couldn’t find the information I needed, so when I was done I wrote it up so others could do the same.

Fast forward a few years and the site is totally different. There are hundreds of articles on every part of building a hot tub, plans you can buy, online courses, parts, and a big library of YouTube videos on the hot tub and plunge pool niche. I’ve helped more than 1,500 DIYers directly as customers, and many more through the website and channel. Who knew building my own hot tub would turn into a business? I love every second of it.

Why I built the software

My background is in technology, so it was a logical step to bring some into the mix. I did it first with my own pool and hot tub light, which solved the problem of expensive pool lights that were big, ugly and difficult to install. Since then I’ve added swim jets and air source heat pumps to the range, each one solving a particular problem. Tub & Pool Designer Pro is no different.

It solves the design problem. When I ask a customer for the layout they’re after, I usually get a sketch back. It can be anything from a scribble on paper to a full CAD drawing in AutoCAD, and scribbles are more common. What I wanted was a way for you to create a 3D visual of the hot tub or plunge pool you’re planning, with actual measurements, so we can both see what we’re talking about.

What you can do in the free design tool

• Build a 3D model of your hot tub or plunge pool with real dimensions.
• Add features like water jets, fountains and benches in a drag and drop environment.
• See exactly what the finished tub or pool will look like before you commit to digging.

Upgrading your design

From the design screen, you can buy a plumbing diagram to match the design you’ve created. You can also buy the plumbing diagram together with the architectural CAD drawings you’ll need if you’re using a general contractor or applying for a permit.

According to the shop page, the architectural CAD and plumbing design includes:

• A 3D plumbing layout, with an online model, PDF images and a video explanation of how the plumbing fits your design.
• Architectural CAD drawings in PDF and DWG formats, suitable for permits or a general contractor.
• Around 6,000 words of construction documentation, from concrete sealing to insulation.
• A parts quotation.

After you order, we arrange a call to discuss your design, your location and how you plan to build. The plumbing design follows established rules and precedent rather than being heavily customised. If you only need the plumbing, there’s a separate plumbing design option.

Today, the plumbing layouts and CAD drawings are prepared by hand rather than generated automatically. I’ll still help with the plumbing side of things and with parts supply.

FAQs

Is Tub & Pool Designer Pro really free?

The design part of the software is free. You only pay if you want me to produce a plumbing diagram or architectural CAD drawings from your design.

Do I need CAD experience?

No. It’s a drag and drop tool, so you don’t need to learn complicated CAD software.

What can I design in it?

Hot tubs and plunge pools, with features such as jets, fountains and benches.

Do I need the CAD drawings?

Only if you’re using a general contractor or need to apply for a permit. Many DIY builders just want the plumbing diagram.

Can you help me with the parts too?

Yes. Once the design is done I can help with the plumbing side and with the parts supply.
