DIY Cold Plunge + Hot Tub Combo? Kyle’s Backyard Wellness Center

A DIY Cold Plunge and a hot tub combined? Is that even possible? It certainly is and in this article, I will walk you through a project that I designed for Kyle in the USA.

The Requirement

The client, Kyle, contacted me a while back regarding designs for a hot tub that can be converted into a cold plunge and vice versa for the wellness centre he was building on his property.

I’m calling this a wellness centre rather than “an extension” because you will see in the images below, the end result with cold plunge, sauna and steam room looks more like something you find in a high end hotel than in your back yard.

Kyle knew what he wanted and gave me specifications such as massage jets, the ability to stand in the cold plunge, and, of course, the ability to convert from one to the other.

He asked me to design these plans, and I created the concept for Kyle.

The Build

Along with the designs, I also provided all the parts Kyle needed to start building his cold plunge come hot tub. This build involved several different steps, so let’s get right into it.

Breaking Ground

The first thing Kyle had to do was dig the hole and form up the hole so that he could put it in the plumbing. This was done right at the start, and the setup no doubt looks strange.

Forming the Walls

Since this was going to be a concrete poured cold plunge/hot tub, the next step was forming up the walls. To do this, Kyle needed to put up shuttering for the walls and you also need to put the plumbing into the walls at this stage, as Kyle did in the image below.

Pouring the Walls

With the plumbing completed, the next step was pouring in the walls of the hot tub. You’re probably wondering by now what is happening, but trust me, the result will blow you away.

Completing the Structure

Right after the hot tub was cured, the guys poured in the rest of the concrete, and the result looked much closer to what you’d expect during a hot tub build.

The next step was creating the structure for the “wellness centre”. Here’s an image of the wooden walls being built.

The Control Room

Once the structure was watertight, Kyle began to install the control room of his DIY hot tub come cold plunge.

As you can see from the picture of the control room, there’s a spa pack for electrical heating and a big chiller to cool the water for the cold plunge.

This setup brings the best of both worlds to one pool. Of course, the water will take a few hours or maybe a day or two to heat up on electric heating, but it will get the water up to the 102-104F mark, which you expect from a hot tub.

Finishing Up

After the control room was done, it was time for the tiling and furnishing of the setup. After selecting a beautiful design, Kyle and his team proceeded with the tiling, and the result was shockingly beautiful.

The End Result

After all this work, Kyle finally saw the fruits of his labour. His “wellness centre” exceeded expectations. Take a look at it below.

Kyle got this dream wellness centre: He has his stand in cold plunge that can be heater as a hot tub too. This has the massage jets he was looking for and he added a sauna and steam room onto the mix.

You taking bookings Kyle for your “wellness centre”? – looks absolutely stunning – just wow!

Hi, Andi here. I own Buildahottub.com and also write all of the articles and info pages on the site. Some years back now, I built my own hot tub but struggled to find the information I needed. So, once my tub was complete, I started this website to help others in their own pursuit of hot tub and plunge pools DIY building information.

Today, I've helped over 1000 DIY customers just like you all over the world build hot tubs and pools. Have a good look around the site, there are lots of resources here. Please do get in touch if I can help you. - Cheers, Andi
